美國聯邦調查局（FBI）的網際網路犯罪申訴中心發布報告指出，2015到2017年間，美國涉及不動產交易的電子郵件詐欺案受害者人數暴增11.1倍，損失金額則激增近22倍。

過去5年來，聯調局稱為「商務電子郵件入侵」（business email compromise）的詐欺案，共造成約120億美元損失；不動產業只占其中一部分。不過對購屋者而言，遭詐欺的後果格外悲慘。
